Abstract | The determination of the thickness of a sludge blanket in primary and secondary clarifiers and in gravity thickness is important in making operational control decisions. Knowing the thickness and concentration will allow the operator to determine sludge volume and detention time. Designed for individuals who have completed National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) level 1 laboratory training skills, this module provides waste water treatment plant operators with the basic skills and information needed to: (1) successfully measure the depth of the sludge blanket in a clarifier or gravity thickener and (2) obtain reliable, consistent results using the procedures outlined. The instructor's manual contains a statement of instructional goals, lists of instructor/student activities and instructional materials, narrative of the slide/tape program used with the module, and student worksheet (with answers). The student workbook contains objectives; sources of materials (electronic blanket finders, sight glasses, and core samples); laboratory procedures using sight glass, electronic, and core sampler methods; instructions for constructing blanket finders; and student worksheet.
